How many things have you done for 10 years?
It started with the first Michigan F-body event put on in Milan, Michigan by a couple of Camaro and Firebird enthusiasts named Paula Bousley and Steve Hauswirth. The event was called "Milan Mania" and even though only 25 cars showed up, it was a great success. The next year, Steve could not help organize another event due to a new family on the way, so I stepped in to help Paula organize the second event. This time, the event was called Milan Mania II and it was a little bit bigger than the first. The next year, Paula was not in the position to help organize the third event, so it was up to me to see what I could put together. I decided to move the event to a larger facility, the Mid Michigan Motorplex. Instead of calling it "Mid Michigan Mania", I shortened the name to the first three letters simply calling the event "M3" to also go along with the 3rd annual event. I have been organizing the event ever since.
Other than this event, I have never done anything for this long. I have never held the same career position for 10 years. I have only been married for a little over 5 years as of 2005. I have never even lived in the same place for 10 years. However, I managed to see the 10th event come and go. It doesn't seem like it was 10 years ago that Paula and Steve organized the first of what would evolve into the Michigan GM Event. None of us knew that it would there would be 9 more after that.
I would like to thank everyone who has supported the M Events, from the very first one until the 10th one. These are the people that came to race and put on a great show for everyone. These are the people who attend to watch and cheer everyone on. These are the many shops and business from small to large who give up a bit of their profits to support a small event put on by a guy who just loves to set up a day of fun and racing for his friends.
Thank you all for the past 10 years of great fun, great friends and great racing. That is what the M Events are all about. Here's to 10 more.
And now for a quick event recap...
Weather is always a concern for an outdoor racing event and after a couple of years of somewhat unfavorable conditions, the weather got back on our side once again and provided us with a great day of racing. Other than a slight breeze, the weather could not have been better.
Despite good racing conditions, attendance was down a quite bit with just under 90 cars. We assume that rising fuel costs and other events on the same day may have caused the drop from an average of 120. Still, as far as I can tell, everyone had a good time just like always. The racing was fierce and cars built by our title sponsor Stenod Performance took top honors with some incredibly powerful cars.
Michigan Speed once again took home the Club Participation Award. It makes you wonder if Michigan Speed is the only car club out there...
A sincere thank you to all who attended and helped make M10 yet another great M Event.
